Volunteer: Lend a Hand to Help a Paw!

The Humane Society of Greater Miami cares for hundreds of homeless dogs, cats, puppies and kittens each day.
We depend on our volunteers to help us help the animals!

HOW TO BECOME A VOLUNTEER:

Thank you for your interest in volunteering for the Humane Society of Greater Miami! In order to become a registered volunteer, you must attend a mandatory volunteer orientation held the first Saturday of every month at the Soffer and Fine Adoption Center (See map) beginning at 11:30 a.m. and will last for approximately two hours. Seating is limited; please arrive at least 30-60 minutes early. Orientations are limited to the first 60 people who sign in that morning. There will be a clipboard at the front counter—please arrive as early as possible (the shelter opens at 11am) to sign in and reserve your spot. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and we appreciate your interest in volunteering with us.

All orientations will remain scheduled UNLESS there is a note on this webpage acknowledging a schedule change; there is no need to call to confirm that orientation is being held.

During the orientation you will learn about the history, philosophies, procedures, and volunteer opportunities of the Humane Society of Greater Miami.  Please wear jeans/pants and comfortable, closed-toed shoes and bring a photo ID. Once you have attended the orientation, you can begin volunteering as early as the next business day. You can volunteer any time during regular business hours (Tuesday-Sunday, 11am-7pm).

All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age. IMPORTANT: Safety is our number one priority for animals, staff and volunteers. Due to risks inherent in handling animals, personal health insurance coverage is required in order to volunteer at the Humane Society of Greater Miami. Unfortunately we are unable to make exceptions to these rules.

We do allow students (at least 16 years old) to fulfill community service hours for school; a minimum of 30 hours is required before we will provide acknowledgement of hours. We do also allow some court mandated community service hours; please call 305-749-1815 to determine eligibility or for more information.

Not old enough to volunteer yet? Click here to find out how kids can help animals too!

Note: Dog walking will not be available as a volunteer task on the second Wednesday of every month due to chemical treatment of the outside areas of the facility. Volunteers are welcome to come visit and play with the dogs inside the shelter on those days.

At this time we do not offer custom orientations; if you have missed the scheduled orientation, please attend the following month.
